Amelia Earhart Ceremony in Aachen/Germany
March 16, 2018, Zonta Club of Aachen arranged - in close cooperation with District Governor Gabriele Brübach - a ceremony and reception to celebrate 2018 Amelia Earhart Fellow Christine Klei-Wichmann who is working on her PhD at RWTH Aachen University.
Club President Renate Weidner addressed an audience of about 50 guests in her welcome speech. City deputy mayor Hilde Scheidt and RWTH Aachen University’s Vice-Rector of Teaching, Prof Aloys Krieg, communicated congratulations from their institutions. Hilde Scheidt emphasized Zonta’s engagement in young women’s education and leadership training, Aloys Krieg stressed the importance to endorse women in academia and industry to overcome the skills shortage in science and technology. The laudatory speech was given by Prof Eike Stumpf, Christine’s thesis advisor. District Governor Gabriele Brübach and Renate Weidner handed out the diploma and pin to Christine. Christine made a short speech explaining the topics of her research in aeronautical sciences. She is conducting an experimental program to provide a better understanding of the fundamental properties, characteristics and influences on the flow field. Christine hopes to work for the academia in the future.
The ceremony passed into a reception gathering Christine’s family including her six month old daughter, her colleagues from university, three “old” AE fellows from Aachen and abroad and many Zontians from Aachen and neighboring cities.
