Zonta Statement

Conclusion of the Zonta District 29 Conference in Essen 3-5 October 2025

Zonta District 29 stands firm in the face of growing pushbacks on women’s rights worldwide. Despite decades of progress, gender equality remains far from achieved. Women continue to be underrepresented in political leadership — with parity in parliaments still a distant goal. Without women’s full participation in decision-making, policies fail to reflect the lived realities of half the population.

This absence of parity has serious consequences — not only for democracy but also for our shared future. When women are excluded from climate negotiations and environmental leadership, the fight for climate justice loses vital perspectives. Women are often the most affected by climate change. Sustainable solutions require that women have an equal seat at the table.

Zonta calls for strengthening advocacy and amplifying women’s voices at every level — from local communities to global institutions. Advocacy must be bold, persistent, and united to counter regressive forces that threaten to roll back hard-won rights.

Equal care responsibilities are another cornerstone of true equality. The burden of unpaid care work continues to fall disproportionately on women, limiting their economic opportunities and reinforcing cycles of dependency and poverty. We must recognize, value, and redistribute care work to achieve real balance in our societies.

Economic empowerment is essential to ensure women’s future security. Financial education must become a priority and help women manage their resources, plan for her future, and close the pension gap that still leaves too many in poverty later in life. Financial literacy and knowledge of women must be enhanced to make informed financial decisions and secure their independence.

Finally, we must confront the rising toxicity of the “manosphere” — an online culture that promotes misogyny and undermines equality. Its narratives of division must be replaced with respect, dialogue, and partnership between all genders.

Zonta reaffirms its commitment to a world where women’s rights are human rights — where equality, justice, and respect are not ideals but realities. Together, we will not be silent, and we will not step back. We are committed to building a better world for women and girls.
